The Obvious

Many of us don’t see the obvious that is right in front of us.

Now just imagine an average day in your life, where the alarm rings before there is light outside. You lay in bed with your eyes open, thinking “I hate this life”, but you know you still need to go to a grueling long day at school not to mention your after school extracurriculars. You finally get home at 5:30 and pray you can finally plop onto your bed and relax, but as you’re falling you remember your hours of homework waiting in your 30 lbs backpack

Throughout the day, you are thinking about your deep hatred for school and how you just want to sleep, I know I have. But in fact, it’s not actually your fault for thinking like this, in David Foster Wallace’s speech, This is Water, Wallace highlights the innate (natural) behavior of humans to believe they are at the center of the world and and how our brains are hard wired to focus on the negatives in our life.

Lets go back to the earlier story, your average day begins with an alarm on your own phone, that many don't even have. You get to lay in your own soft bed with clean sheets in your own room. You get to get ready with clean running water and a clean towel and clothes. You have reliable safe transportation to get to school, you even are privileged enough to have the opportunity to enrich your life with extracurriculars. You even have a desk or table at home to do your homework.

As the day progressed, I bet you didn't take time to think about how great your life is. So I want everyone to take time out of their day to focus on the good in your life.

  1. I like how you juxtaposed the two views, showcasing that a slight change in tone yields a whole different day.
