Woman's Silent Struggles
The 1920s, also known as the roaring twenties, was a time in the United States when the modernism movement began. This time was marked by a rapid and growing economy, big societal changes, and the Jazz-Age. But this time wasn't great for everyone. During this time in history woman were not allowed to do pretty much anything, they couldn't open a credit card, they couldn't vote, or even get an education as no institutions accepted women.
Maybe the roaring twenties weren't so great. This idea is exemplified in the classic book The Great Gatsby, this book does the opposite of showing womans strength; rather, it only highlights how they are being used and disrespected. In the first chapter we learn about how Tom is cheating on his wife (Daisy), OPENLY. This is not only frowned upon today in the 2020s but shows how Daisy is an obedient yes woman and has lost her voice. This straight disrespect and disregard for women is once again displayed with an act of aggression by none other than Tom, he, when meeting his mistress named Myrtle, got mad at her for saying Daisy’s name and rather than being respectful and discussing why it bothered him, he chose to exert his power and broke her nose to show his dominance.
