A common myth that has been debunked numerous times is the belief that men are smarter and more intelligent than women. This myth paints the picture of women being dumb and men being intellectually superior. However, through numerous studies, this statement has been proven false.

One reason that this idea came to take place is because of womens’ rights in the past. In historical societal structures, women were forbid from pursuing an education and were often held to a lower social status. Over time, this led to feeling that women are intellectually inferior to men because they don't have an education. This later on got reinforced through biased interpretations of brain size and biology which had been debunked by science through multiple studies.

People also argue that women on average tend to score lower on intelligence tests. This is true, women tend to score on average 2-4 points lower than men on IQ tests but this number doesn't tell the whole story. In many countries and places around the world, women still don't have the same access to education and resources that men have. Many studies have proved that math and science abilities are actually more tied to socialization and cultural expectations than biology. In fact, when women of countries with more gender equality are tested, the scores of both men and women are pretty much identical and show no gaps in performance.

Myths like this tend to arise due to the human need to make sense of everything around them. It serves as a way for cultures to explain unknown phenomena in a way that provides comfort and a sense of order. It is important to understand that many stereotypes, like this, are actually false and inaccurate ways of judging people.

  1. I liked your analysis of the stereotype, and how you were able to include that this stereotype, and many like it, are actually linked to a 3rd-party factor: in this case, access to education and resources.

  2. I liked your analysis of whether men are smarter than women. I liked your connection to IQ tests to give physical evidence. Your explanation of why men do better on iq tests make sense.
