Akrasia

Instant gratification versus delayed gratification is a constant internal battle. Otherwise known as "Akrasia, acting against ones better judgment.

Smoking is one of the best examples of akrasia, the people who participate in the unhealthy habit know it's bad, they understand the risks associated with it. Smokers choose instant gratification and succumb to the desire to "smoke a joint", though they understand that their habit can lead to cancer or " Smokers lungs" and eventually lead to death they continue to chase the dopamine rush that follows consuming nicotine.

Even though choosing to not participate in smoking will eventually lead to a brighter health, people still do it, why? well, a possible reason could also be peer pressure. Many people choose to stay away from nicotine and smoking in general, but, when your "friends" tell you to "try it, your body's id - The devil on your shoulder - convinces you to do it because then your

"friend will accept you and then you will be one of them. Id also isn't always a bad thing, id tells or pushes you to choose the decision that benefits you in the moment, meanwhile superego – the “angel” on your shoulder – act as a moral compass. Where sometimes the superego wants you to do something that isn't beneficial to you but may help someone else, to do this the superego uses guilt. Meanwhile, your id tries to verify you feelings and attempts to remove your guilt. So maybe, Akrasia is just your id succeeding in silencing your superego

  1. Connecting the topic of akrasia to id, ego, and superego is a very interesting connection that hadn't crossed my mind before. I agree with your notion that akrasia is a result of id winning out over your superego.

  2. Vyom, I really liked your discussion of connecting akrasia to the human mind of our ego, superego, and id and how those combined impact our decisions that we make everyday, and sometimes one can outweigh the other and really change our decisions.

  3. I like how you considered outside factors in your argument as a possibility along side internal mental factors. You have a clear overall understanding of this idea which showed in this blog.
